Protecting yourself from harmful UV rays on the Surf Coast

UV radiation is responsible for more than 95% of all skin cancers in Australia. Among the many benefits of living on the Surf Coast, is having access to our world-class beaches and coastlines, and living an active outdoor lifestyle.

The SunSmart Global UV app provides real-time UV levels and sun protection advice tailored to your location. Sun protection is especially important when the UV is rated 3 or above. To reduce your risk, follow these sun protection strategies:

  • Slip on Protective Clothing: Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants made of tightly woven fabric.
  • Slop on Sunscreen: Use a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with an SPF of 50+ and apply it 20 minutes before sun exposure. Reapply every two hours or after swimming or sweating.
  • Slap on a Hat: Choose a broad-brimmed hat that shades your face, neck, and ears.
  • Seek Shade: Avoid direct sun exposure, especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when UV radiation is strongest.
  • Slide on Sunglasses: Wear sunglasses that meet the Australian Standard AS 1067 to protect your eyes from UV damage .

By adopting these protective measures, you can significantly reduce your risk of developing skin cancer
