How much sun is enough?
In winter, we do need some sun exposure to help our bodies make vitamin D, but how much sun is enough?
If you are carving up the slopes you will need sun protection as the snow reflects most of the winter UV so sunscreen is a must and those goggles aren’t just a fashion accessory, they are crucial eye protection. But if you are walking the dog for a short walk, you can leave the hat at home and not worry about the sunscreen.
Aim to get about 5-10 minutes sun per day in winter in Southern Victoria (when the UV is lower than 3).
If you have darker skin, you may need longer exposure as it may take 3-6 times as long for your body to make the same amount of vitamin D.
Did you know?
Did you know that physical activity itself also helps increase vitamin D production – so get out walking, riding your bike, gardening – whatever your enjoy! Download and check the BOM UV index
And don’t forget, if you are heading to sunnier climes the UV will be higher. So don’t be tempted to “top up your tan” because we know that a tan isn’t healthy skin, it’s sun damaged skin. Do you need to check your vitamin D? Check out the Cancer Council risk factors for low vitamin D here
