Skin cancer develops when skin cells are damaged, often by UV radiation. Factors that may increase your risk include:
- Sun exposure – particularly history of sunburn or outdoor work
- Solarium use – past use of tanning beds increases your risk
- Family history – a family history of melanoma or skin cancer may indicate genetic predisposition
- Personal history – previous skin cancers increase future risk
- Certain medications – some drugs increase sensitivity to UV radiation
Skin cancers are categorized based on the cells they originate from:
- Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC): Slow-growing and rarely spreads. Typically treated with excision.
- Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC): Can appear quickly; rarely metastasizes. Usually treated surgically.
- Melanoma: The most serious form, often dark in color but can be amelanotic. Requires prompt excision and sometimes further treatment or investigation.
